The Director of Communications works closely with the Pastor/Head of Staff to help implement the church’s mission and goals. He or she is responsible for developing and implementing an overall communications strategy for the church. This person will also contribute to the administrative functions of the church as directed by the Pastor/Head of Staff.
 
The Director of Communications will be a primary strategist for communicating the brand and story of First Presbyterian Church. This person will be responsible, along with other leaders, for clarifying the church’s vision, goals, and values, conceptualizing each facet, and publishing messages to support them to all relevant print, web, and video mediums. As a key part of the leadership team, this position will help set direction for the church while leading a high-quality external communications effort designed to reach the world outside our walls.
 
The ideal candidate will exhibit a passion for God and a Christ-like spirit, possess strong technical knowledge and creativity, and be a self-starter who can strengthen our brand and online presence. This individual must be an efficient organizer, planner, and team player.
 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in a related field (communications, marketing, journalism, etc.).
  • Proven track record in design, production, marketing, advertising, external communication, media, website design and maintenance, video production, and public relations.
  • Ability to cultivate strong relations with external media.
  • Ability to provide expert communications consultation to all levels of the church organization.
  • Experience in managing social media strategy and communications as well as keeping abreast of current trends.
  • Outstanding organizational abilities.
  • Ability to maintain the highest levels of confidentiality.
  • Uphold and work within the policies and procedures of the First Presbyterian Church of Topeka, KS. FPC is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
 
Job Responsibilities
  • Coordinate communications with the Head of Staff and appropriate program staff.
  • Develop strategy for and oversee all social media for the church.
  • Develop and maintain an outstanding website.
  • Write press releases for the Topeka Capital-Journal; create ads as needed.
  • Create videos that tell the story of our church, its members and ministries, and use them appropriately to publicize and market the church.
  • Attend Sunday morning worship and activities as directed by the Head of Staff (it is expected the Director of Communications would take a day off during the week to compensate for working on Sundays).
  • Work with our Congregational Development Team to reach out to visitors and newcomers.
  • Attend weekday church activities within the scope of the position.
  • Become knowledgeable about our church and its history; be available and willing to lead visitors on tours of our Tiffany Windows; staff “First Fridays” when needed (held on First Friday of the month).
  • Market the church and its programs and activities through all appropriate media, including email marketing; create and maintain database for this purpose.
  • Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings. Occasionally attend relevant retreats and/or conferences as requested by the Head of Staff.
  • Assist with some internal communications as needed, such as brochures, slide show/Power Point presentations, stewardship campaign, and newsletter (if asked by the Head of Staff).
  • Work patiently and professionally with church members, remembering that all are volunteers.
