Reporting Relationship: Senior Vice President (“SVP”) of Economic Development
Primary Accountabilities:
The Business Development Manager (“Manager”) supports the SVP of Economic Development to attract and retain primary employers in the Topeka and Shawnee County community. It is expected that the Manager will focus on substantive results by creating innovative programs that assist in making Topeka and Shawnee County a prime location for businesses to grow and thrive. The Manager shall develop quality relationships with local employers and site consultants and work to help establish GO Topeka as a leading economic development organization in the nation.
Major Duties:
  • Initiates and implements creative and innovative initiatives and programs that provide substantive results associated with the existing business sector, especially the primary and key employers.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of programs and initiatives to identify local at-risk companies and local companies that have the potential to expand.
  • Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of a questionnaire that identifies the relative strengths and weaknesses of existing companies and their potential for growth.
  • Assists in the identification of problems that local companies are having and develops a plan of action to provide solutions to those problems.
  • Implements a substantive annual business visitation program, records the input from the visitations and provides appropriate reports to GO Topeka and community leadership.
  • Develops and maintains regular records, information and data related to correspondence, communication and visitation programs related to existing companies.
  • Develops expertise in state and local incentive programs that relate to business expansion, the training and retraining of existing and new employees, and any other programs that can be marketed and delivered to existing companies to enhance their ability to grow and expand in the Topeka area.
  • Responds to requests for proposals and/or information from prospective new companies.
  • Assists in coordination of site visits from prospects.
  • Represents Topeka and Shawnee County in external marketing efforts with site consultants.
  • Provides direct assistance to existing companies actively involved in or planning future expansions.
  • Complies with the policies of GO Topeka and the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce.
  • Complies with the Ethics Policy of the International Economic Development Council.
  • Assists in other areas as necessary, and carries out other assignments as may be directed by the SVP of Economic Development.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university is required, with a preference for a degree in marketing, business, or related discipline. A combination of education and experience may be considered by GO Topeka in lieu of a degree.
  • Economic Development experience highly preferred.
  • Experience in job and investment attraction or substantial experience within business and industry or as a marketing professional.
  • Understanding of the changing dynamics of business and what is required by the community to grow businesses in such an environment.
  • Demonstrated reporting, data analysis and research skills.
  • Ability to gather large amounts of data, analyze, evaluate and disseminate in a succinct and effective manner.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; the ability to build and sustain relationships with existing business executives, site selectors, and industrial real estate professionals.
  • Ability to effectively work in a high pressure, fast-paced environment and be held accountable for results.
  • Strong attention to accuracy and detail but with the ability to expedite materials in a fast-paced environment.
  • Creative, innovative and strategic-thinking abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple projects.
  • Professional attitude and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and various databases essential to analyze targets and program.
  • Complies with the policies of the GO Topeka and the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce. Complies with the Ethics Policy of the International Economic Development Council.
  • Ability to travel, regionally, nationally and internationally with overnight travel – valid driver’s license required.
  • Must be a permanent Shawnee County resident or establish permanent residency in Shawnee County within sixty (60) days of employment.

Physical Demands:
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to read computer screens and mail, talk on the phone.
  • Ability to unpack and move supplies up to thirty (30) lbs.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends and attend events required.
