Job Title: Medical Billing Clerk
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Full-time, On-Site
Work hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm
Reports to: Office Manager
Location: Topeka, KS
Pay Range: Starting at $18.50/hr, based on experience
Summary: Revenue-generating position responsible for ensuring accurate and timely billing, claims processing, payment posting, and collection activities in support of organizational financial performance.
- Accurately input patient demographic, insurance, and medical data to generate charges.
- Submit claims to insurance carriers and/or issue billing statements to patients.
- Post payments from patients and insurance companies, ensuring reimbursement accuracy.
- Actively manage and collect on delinquent accounts.
- Perform miscellaneous administrative duties as assigned.
Responsibilities:
- Verifying and entering patient demographic information, accurate CPT/ICD-10 codes, and current insurance details for each charge.
- Processing and submitting claims to multiple insurance carriers in accordance with payer requirements.
- Reviewing payment accuracy; posting payments and following up on discrepancies, denials, and appeals.
- Maintaining current knowledge of insurance-specific policies and procedures, including claim filing and timely filing requirements.
- Performing additional accounts receivable duties as assigned.
Secondary Responsibilities (as part of Billing Team):
- Completing morning operational tasks, including system start-up, running error reports, reconciling active balance sheets, and confirming successful submission of prior-day electronic claims.
- Retrieving daily mail; posting patient payments and resolving discrepancies.
- Calculating, preparing, and reconciling daily deposits.
- Reconciling and balancing daily payment worksheets.
- Answering phones and resolving patient inquiries in a professional and customer-focused manner.
- Entering daily patient demographic, insurance, and medical information (CPT codes, ICD-10 diagnosis codes, anesthesia time, and provider details) after verifying accuracy against hospital records.
- Verifying and posting insurance payments and completing required follow-up actions, including appeals, payer outreach, and corrected claim submissions.
- Managing and resolving delinquent accounts within the collection queue.
- Reconciling credit account balances.
Minimum Qualifications: (Qualification requirements)
Education
Experience
- Medical billing experience strongly preferred.
- Prior customer service experience preferred.
Skill Requirements
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to collaborate with physician offices and insurance companies.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, with extensive use of web-based systems.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Highly organized with effective time management skills.
- Ability to understand and comply with confidentiality and HIPAA requirements.

Physical Demands
