Heartland is a financially sound, member-owned, electric distribution cooperative providing service with 11,400 meters on over 3,800 miles of line. Heartland provides electric service to its consumer-members, which are located in parts of 12 different counties in Southeast Kansas. Heartland’s headquarters is located in Girard, Kansas, the county seat of Crawford County and is 120 miles south of Kansas City and 45 miles northwest of Joplin, Missouri.  The area offers all the advantages of small communities, low cost of living and an abundance of outdoor activities.

Major Duties:
  • Managing the staff within the finance, member services, and administrative departments and ensuring they are informed of the necessary policies and decisions that affect their positions.
  • Preparing and analyzing the monthly and year-to-date financial statements for the Cooperative and its subsidiary, Heartland Propane, and reporting those results to the board of directors and top management.
  • Developing long-range financial forecasts and cash flow projections, assisting with cost-of-service studies and rate studies, and making recommendations for updates of the equity management policy.
  • Coordinating and preparing the annual budget, analyzing variances, and advising the CEO of its status.
  • Maintaining the Cooperative’s overall accounting system in compliance with all RUS, Federal and State guidelines and regulations and board-approved financial policies.
Job Requirements:
  • Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field is required with a minimum of five (5) years of experience. Experience in USDA Rural Utility Services (RUS) Uniform System of Accounts preferred.
  • Required Licenses or Certifications: Valid Driver’s License, Certified Public Accountant License or the ability to obtain is preferred, but not necessary.
  • A strong understanding of Balance Sheets, Income Statements, as well as payroll and plant asset accounting.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and co-workers.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle and feel, reach with hands, arms and talk and hear.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Vision abilities include close and distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
